The new PMP® exam and what it means for your company

PMI fundamentally modernized the PMP® certification as of July 9, 2026. The emphasis shifts noticeably toward the business environment and value creation: the “Business Environment” domain grows from 8% to 26%.

What does that mean in practice? Project managers will increasingly be measured by the benefit and measurable value their projects create for the company, not only by whether time, budget and performance targets are met.

New ECO weighting of the exam domains

Since July 9, 2026, PMI has reweighted the three exam domains: “Business Environment” grows from 8% to 26% and thus becomes the third largest block of the exam.

In return, “People” falls from 42% to 33% and “Process” from 50% to 41%.

For your project managers this means that business benefit, compliance and value creation move to the center of the exam.

What is changing

A focus on value & outcomes

The exam puts benefit and contribution to value further to the front than pure adherence to process, including more scenarios on AI, sustainability and stakeholder involvement.

Nine lessons instead of six

The course structure has been extended from 6 to 9 lessons and aligned entirely with the current ECO 2026, from “Business Environment” to “Close the Project”.

Exam: 240 minutes, 180 questions

The exam time increases from 230 to 240 minutes (180 questions, two 10-minute breaks). Scenario-based, online proctored or at a Pearson VUE test center.

Certificate of Achievement (COA)

After the course, participants take a mandatory knowledge test and fill in a feedback form. Only once the test is passed do they receive PMI's COA, the official proof of at least 35 hours and a prerequisite for registering for the exam.

Language support newly regulated

During the exam, candidates can switch between their chosen language and the English version of the questions, giving more confidence with tricky wording.

Official materials only through an ATP

The official PMI courseware is available exclusively through Authorized Training Partners, not from individuals or gray-market providers. Tiba is an ATP: you train with the genuine, current PMI materials.
